1st Grade students analyzed the landscape art of Iowa artist, Grant Wood. They observed space and atmospheric perspective as well as various colors and textures in the fields, hills and gardens in the artworks. Students began by learning how to draw a three dimensional barn and silo. Students then created a foreground, middleground and background. They divided up their space and added textures with texture plates, as well as hand drawn trees, flowers, plants and paths using oil pastels and crayons. Students finished their work by mixing watercolors to create various shades of greens, yellows and browns for their land, and used knowledge of watercolor techniques such as color blending and wet on wet to create gorgeous skies at various times of day.

One Point Perspective Names
5th Grade students learned about one point perspective to create the illusion of three dimensional names or initials. Students learned how to create block letters and then used knowledge of a vanishing point to make them turn into a form. Students used knowledge of value to shade their forms with Prismacolor pencils and used watercolor techniques in the background.

5th Grade Zentangle Art
Students participated in this relaxing art activity while practicing use of pattern, line, shape, contrast and space. Doodling in this way calms the nervous system and helps focus.
5th Grade Soft Sculptures
Artists were introduced to soft sculpture as a medium. Students designed their own pattern, cut out pieces, embellished them and learned how to use three different kinds of stitches to sew their sculpture together.

5th Grade Gelli Plate Printmaking
Students learned how to pull layered monoprints using a printing plate called a Gelli Plate. These plates were purchased with money earned from the Art to Remember fundraiser. Thank you for your support!
After completing 3 prints, students added collage elements to finish their work. The prints were mounted on a frame to create a unified triptych art piece.
