Grant Wood Inspired Landscape Paintings by 1st Grade

1st Grade students analyzed the landscape art of Iowa artist, Grant Wood. They observed space and atmospheric perspective as well as various colors and textures in the fields, hills and gardens in the artworks. Students began by learning how to draw a three dimensional barn and silo. Students then created a foreground, middleground and background. They divided up their space and added textures with texture plates, as well as hand drawn trees, flowers, plants and paths using oil pastels and crayons. Students finished their work by mixing watercolors to create various shades of greens, yellows and browns for their land, and used knowledge of watercolor techniques such as color blending and wet on wet to create gorgeous skies at various times of day.
